#14 - Sheltered by the Supreme Person: Finding Peace Through Japa, Stories, and Simplicity
Join us for a slow morning in the green hills as we settle in, stumble our way through greetings, and chant Japa together on our beads. There’s laughter, sidetracks about John Lennon, Basho, and that old “war is over” sign lost somewhere in childhood memory. Chant with us or just listen while we fumble our way to peace, weaving in sweetness and a bit of honest mess.
We start with grounding and personal stories (remembering the first time we saw that “Footsteps in the Sand” poem, or learning meditation as a kid surrounded by host families in Japan), then open up about what chanting and simple practices do for the body and the mind. You’ll hear about birds, goats, letting go of old stuff, living in a van, and what “wealth” really means when you strip things back. There’s gentle humor, plenty of awkward pauses, and the messiness of actual daily bhakti life.
We chant “Gopala Govinda Rama Madana Mohana” for a bit, with notes about finding that rhythm for yourself (slow, fast, just loud enough), and share how animals, friends, and every living being are part of this song. Toward the end, we talk about moving on, letting go, and what it means to be sheltered and carried by something bigger. This is for anyone worn out by the world and looking for kindness, softness, and a reminder they aren’t alone.

is it recording I don't know
2
:maybe you can stop it
3
:maybe you can introduce it when I get my people oh okay
4
:haha
5
:hello
6
:Namaste Haribo peace be with you and upon you
7
:I love that sign
8
:I don't know from John Lennon and Yoko Ono
9
:I was just a kid I was eight years
10
:maybe 6 or seven when they were doing it
11
:when they had the or maybe it was before the
12
:I know Lennon was shot murdered in 1980
13
:but they had a beautiful sign up somewhere in London
14
:and New York City
15
:go ahead
16
:war is over war is over if you want it
17
:this also reminds me of that poem I like by Basho
18
:in making a cup of tea I stop the war
19
:not that you magically stop the war somewhere else
20
:but really you stop the war for a moment for yourself
21
:taking
22
:taking a
23
:a moment of transcendence to transcend above or beyond
24
:the constant challenges
25
:of the body and mind in the material world
26
:and to taste the nectar for which we're always anxious
27
:that's
28
:and we're just gonna do a little chanting on our beats
29
:you can listen
30
:you can put on your headphones if you like
31
:we're not doing this to impress you
32
:but maybe just to impress upon you
33
:that this is something you can take with you everywhere
34
:it's so it's so beginner and advanced at the same time
35
:I know people that the most advanced people
36
:I've ever met in my life
37
:they're also the most kind and humble
38
:and hard working and devoted
39
:but they still chant on their beads
40
:you know and it becomes a real pleasure
41
:but in the beginning sometimes
42
:you just have to do a practice
43
:in order to get a real taste for it
44
:if you just do a few and try it for one day
45
:you won't know but for the last 26 years
46
:no matter where I've gone
47
:no matter what I've been doing
48
:I've always been able to have these beads with me and
49
:they're not eternal but the practice I do on them is
50
:and it's the practice of mantra meditation
51
:Ma from Manas mind to give shelter to the mind
52
:we're looking we're always looking for shelter
53
:we're always looking to
54
:just like bees too
55
:we're always looking for nectar everywhere
56
:we're looking for pleasure
57
:and what I found and many others have found
58
:is that in transcendent sound
59
:you can
60
:I can find shelter and pleasure at the same time
61
:and in a way where
62
:certainly gone through periods
63
:where I wanted to try and find pleasure
64
:to to
65
:to satisfy that pleasure through my tongue
66
:and I just get fat
67
:so the nice thing about chanting on beads
68
:is that we get shelter and pleasure
69
:without the downsides of
70
:seeking those things in material life
71
:it's a very simple process
72
:but it's also very
73
:it's very humbling also which is a very nice
74
:thing to feel whenever I feel a shred of humility
75
:it's a very sweet taste
76
:one that I pray and hope that I can expand
77
:how about you
78
:I I didn't find any exercise yet
79
:that calms the mind so quickly
80
:yeah
81
:so we're just gonna do a little
82
:we'll just do this together for a little bit
83
:we'll I usually don't say it so loud
84
:I just say it out loud enough that I can hear it
85
:but I would I have found that when my mind
86
:or my body or both are more agitated
87
:if it's safe and appropriate to do so
88
:I I chant a little louder and it really it brings
89
:it brings sometimes I'm furious on my
90
:you know my I'm rolling the bead back and forth
91
:sometimes I'm just really peacefully touching it
92
:but I'm engaging the sense of touch
93
:the hearing the the voice
94
:sometimes
95
:we have nice pictures up too that we can engage in
96
:in our eyes being engaged in transcribe the
97
:speech
98
:into English
99
:Gopal Gobindarama Madana Mohana
100
:we'll do it a little faster
101
:but again
102
:you just do it as long as you can hear the sounds
103
:you can say it as slow or fast as you like
104
:but we'll just do it for some cadence
105
:we'll do you know 10 to 15 beats here
106
:and it's so nice for us and please share in
107
:in in this practice with us of
108
:of Japa Japa mala meditation on beats

:madana mohana haribo haha
135
:whoa it's very nice and stereo no
136
:no it's
137
:the sun came up
138
:and I was just feeling this warmth coming over me
139
:not just physically
140
:but also in my heart and I felt sort of a giddiness um
141
:I find that when I surrender more to the sound
142
:it bubbles up some
143
:some feelings of joy and ecstasy in my heart
144
:and I get a little
145
:sometimes I get a bit silly and jump up
146
:and jump around oh yeah
147
:like the song that you found right
148
:yeah this transcendental music
149
:he started to play it and then he just started to
150
:you just started to smile and laugh and jump around
151
:and he was chanting and it was so contagious yeah
152
:it's really sad we can't play music on YouTube
153
:because of property rights
154
:but um we'll try to play
155
:Maria got me a really nice guitar and a Diana yeah
156
:and we'll try to do more uh kirtan together on the road
157
:we're heading over to the U
158
:K soon so you'll see some different sights and places
159
:yeah
160
:you're gonna take a ferry across to Italy
161
:and then drive through Italy oh
162
:we'll do some on the ferry yeah
163
:it'll be fun I'll have some ferry meditation
164
:ferry meditation and then we'll get into the UK and
165
:yeah that would be something we're letting go of some
166
:some more material things that we don't need
167
:or we can't use anymore
168
:and they're hard to carry around in a small van so
169
:we've been in this process
170
:well maybe this will be a good chance to introduce
171
:but over the next 10 to 15 days
172
:we had a lot of people want to ask us more about
173
:how we got came to the place of just
174
:having a lot more free freedom free time
175
:look at that bird over there oh
176
:where it's it's on the road on the road yeah
177
:on the road oh there oh my God yeah
178
:it's really colourful
179
:sorry so no
180
:somebody love I I birds get my attention they're uh
181
:they represent freedom to me
182
:they fly and they sing so beautifully yeah
183
:if I could only sing like no
184
:we just concluded the first two weeks of Choo
185
:Choo magic on the daily
186
:so maybe we can start diving in
187
:into some topics that yeah
188
:people are asking us about
189
:and we're talking about really
190
:a lot of the practices we do is all about it redefining
191
:really
192
:a lot of people think wealth is one thing and we're
193
:we're just trying to give a different perspective
194
:on what wealth is is
195
:is unfolding for us inside
196
:and then the exterior wealth
197
:it looks very different than it might have 30 years ago
198
:when I was 20 years old or whatever
199
:and
200
:no matter what happens to me in the future
201
:I hope I can come to this type of understanding
202
:more and more at a much younger age
203
:in body
204
:I'm eternal but
205
:you know I don't think this might be my last
206
:my last kick at the can around the planet yeah
207
:I still got a lot of work to do
208
:so that's good it's up to god
209
:but yeah
210
:in my activities but so we
211
:we were thinking of taking wealth and all ways
212
:as a guiding topic for the next two weeks
213
:yeah and we find too
214
:that in our studies
215
:almost all the scriptures around the world
216
:they talk about equal weights and measures
217
:keep that for the next one yes
218
:yeah and they talk usury and what is money
219
:and how to engage money
220
:so that it becomes spiritually purified
221
:and we want to talk about some new technologies too
222
:that have a great deal of potential for goodness
223
:for good in Bitcoin and in uh
224
:how do how do we keep things real when we've got a
225
:a I and central bank digital currencies
226
:and all of these networks that are very
227
:can be used very negatively
228
:but just like nuclear energy
229
:we can use it for good as well it is
230
:there's a great deal of possibility
231
:but like always without the right
232
:without a purified or at least um
233
:a better understanding of consciousness and who we are
234
:a lot of these technologies just get used for
235
:for bad things so just like electricity
236
:you can use it to make some toast
237
:or you can use it to electrocute someone
238
:ha ha so or or
239
:you know use that force for
240
:for negative things so
241
:I would love to be offering more
242
:just Frank discussions about uh
243
:how we simplified a lot of our
244
:uh processes how we
245
:the simple processes we engage in
246
:the habits that we've cultivated
247
:and continue to cultivate
248
:so that we have this really nice chance to
249
:spend a lot more time in reflection
250
:in contemplation
251
:rumination
252
:in deep thoughts around some beautiful scriptures
253
:we're studying
254
:Antra meditation japa kirtan garam breathing and
255
:eating a very simple diet
256
:peaceful diet
257
:and just some simple things you can do
258
:no matter what stage of life you're in
259
:some very simple things that are profound over time
260
:that you can do just around meal times and
261
:with some incense and a few things
262
:you can you can really
263
:deeply begin to develop more gratitude
264
:and forgiveness and thankfulness in your life
265
:and share that with those around you
266
:that's the wealth that we're truly looking for
267
:is love for god love for others
268
:more constant understanding of our true identity
269
:purpose function position
270
:when we know who we are and where we belong
271
:and how we fit in
272
:in a sense into the cosmic scheme of things
273
:it's easier just to be more of ourselves
274
:and I I've personally found that to be incredibly
275
:a incredible relief
276
:we talk about shelter like an umbrella
277
:but just
278
:having a certain level of surrender and acceptance
279
:gives a great deal of relief
280
:as well because we
281
:I don't have to do it on my own anymore
282
:you've never been alone in the first place
283
:yeah that's true as well
284
:do you want to tell the story about
285
:the footsteps in the sand
286
:oh gosh
287
:he said you that touched you so deeply at some point
288
:yeah well
289
:a long time ago many moons ago
290
:uh I was a
291
:as a 17 year old I went to Japan for a year for
292
:for an exchange and my oldest childhood friend
293
:my best friend at the time
294
:and still an incredible friend
295
:I mean I now know my best friend is the supreme person
296
:and no disrespect to my oldest childhood friend
297
:I admire him a great deal
298
:he's a very intelligent person
299
:and very compassionate as well
300
:and community driven and wants to help the world with
301
:just taking better care of
302
:of of the world we have
303
:but we used to write each other a lot of letters
304
:a lot of postcards and we were always like doodling and
305
:you know
306
:we would take a nice thing and we would draw like
307
:a monster coming up out of the sea or whatever
308
:and
309
:in one of these exchanges I have I've
310
:I've gotten one of these you know
311
:I've been away I was away in Japan for the first time
312
:for a very long time away from my family
313
:my culture my home
314
:everything that seemed familiar and normal to me
315
:and it was a big part of shaking up that world
316
:and getting me more into meditation
317
:because I began a more formal practice of
318
:of the impersonal silent meditation when I was in Japan
319
:one that had
320
:that carried over from my next door neighbor
321
:who was my godfather since I was born
322
:a Japanese man named Paul Mikatsu
323
:he also taught me meditation at a very young age
324
:but again it was an impersonal
325
:quiet silent meditation
326
:but when we were over there
327
:you know I
328
:I could feel the feelings of uh
329
:I felt really sad sometimes
330
:very lonely even though I was surrounded by
331
:and the Japanese people were wonderful
332
:I stayed with some incredible families
333
:I'm hoping next year to go back and meet them again
334
:these families that took me
335
:in
336
:as a young man and hosted me as if I was their own son
337
:they were so kind to me
338
:and people in Japan were so incredibly
339
:oh so respectful and clean and neat
340
:and I really admire Japan
341
:and the Japanese people and their culture
342
:and their
343
:many of their social arts
344
:I got involved in judo and then in
345
:we go to the Rock Gardens every month in Kyoto
346
:to study with the Zen master there
347
:my my
348
:my father my host fathers were really happy
349
:because no one wanted to go do the old things
350
:the old ways with them and I did
351
:and we kind of I was kind of like having lots of dads
352
:they took me around to see the ancient sites
353
:Nara
354
:and some of the ancient pilgrimage routes in Shikoku
355
:and Kyushu
356
:lots of beautiful nature there as well
357
:but in one of these exchanges
358
:there was one of these very hallmark type card
359
:where you see the footsteps in the sand
360
:yeah I mean
361
:millions of people have seen this image and it's like
362
:it's a little story like
363
:about oh God
364
:you know uh
365
:there's a there's two sets of footprints
366
:as if God's always with us
367
:and then this person only sees one set of footprints
368
:he's like why
369
:why Lord
370
:at the time I'm doing a terrible job paraphrasing it
371
:but in the in the card
372
:basically the person is asking God
373
:why during my hardest parts
374
:of life
375
:did you leave me there's only one set of footprints
376
:and he said no my
377
:my child that's when I was carrying you
378
:and something in that really hit me
379
:there was some transcendent wisdom
380
:in that hallmark card and in that
381
:and it really dawned on me in that moment
382
:it became covered up again and then exposed again
383
:but it really felt like
384
:I just felt this huge yearning in my heart
385
:to suddenly realize
386
:to just realize how much I needed someone
387
:higher than me bigger than me
388
:I needed the shelter and Protection of
389
:the telephone
390
:calls to my biological parents weren't cutting it
391
:I needed some
392
:I needed something much bigger than me to give me
393
:the feeling of being at home
394
:you know and of being protected of being loved
395
:lots of people there at the time
396
:it was you know
397
:there weren't as many foreigners there
398
:and it was like being a rock star to some degree
399
:had a lot of people coming up and taking pictures
400
:and wanting to touch you and fawning over you
401
:wanting to take you out for karaoke here
402
:just to be seen with their friends and
403
:and it didn't really that
404
:it was fun for a week or two
405
:but it became actually quite annoying and troublesome
406
:and it didn't satisfy
407
:it didn't give me a sense of a good feeling
408
:I just wanted to be left alone
409
:you know uh
410
:but that I
411
:I just remember
412
:being profoundly impacted by that feeling of
413
:I just that's so true
414
:I need someone to carry me
415
:through the trials and tribulations of this world
416
:being in strange lands can
417
:can precipitate that that feeling
418
:so just know that you're never alone and that actually
419
:the supreme person you're never alone haha
420
:hmm
421
:and it's nice to be around others
422
:that can help remind me of that
423
:or it's really
424
:I encourage you to find other people to be with
425
:who can remind you of that
426
:especially in this time where it's just really nuts out
427
:out in the world just complete madness
428
:um there is no really good leadership out there
429
:hardly at all
430
:um there are a few
431
:few leaders that are inspiring
432
:yeah it's getting late
433
:it's getting late yes
434
:time to wrap things up yeah
435
:and I wanna see the goats
436
:oh you can hear the
437
:that's right we can hear goats
438
:can we see the goats yeah
439
:yeah they put these lovely bells
440
:they're almost like you know
441
:the cows in Switzerland
442
:when they have the bells around their necks
443
:can we see the goats please
444
:yeah let's go see the goats
445
:we like hanging out with the
446
:you know it's nice
447
:the animals do love the chanting too
448
:you know that's another thing
449
:the transcendent sound
450
:you can share it with every living entity
451
:it's really hard to to drive by a cat that's suffering
452
:at the side of the road
453
:with a limp and just silently meditate with it
454
:and you'll crash your car
455
:but you can chant aribo or goranga out the window
456
:and the cats always like there
457
:they always look
458
:and it's very nice way to give some mercy
459
:some kindness some shelter
460
:a taste of the transcendental
461
:to people and other bodies
462
:everyone's looking for the same shelter and love
463
:so with that
464
:hi all hi all
465
:Namaste and peace be with you and upon you
466
:thanks for hanging out with us today
